Monitoring our Water in the Coalfields
Beyond Coal organizer Lauren organized a field trip to get more people involved in water testing in the coalfields near mine sites. Sierra Club Bluegrass Group member Rick Clewett and coalfields resident Rick Handshoe helped facilitate this training. There were eight participants and we tested several sites. The intention is to continue to grow this as a way to involve more people in regular water testing.
Coal Country Exploratory Outings
We are also continuing our “Coal Country Outings” to proposed mine sites. This is an opportunity to help explore those parts of Eastern Kentucky that are “at risk” for impacts from mining, and we are hiking out to the eastern Kentucky coalfields to monitor, photograph, and document changes to the land.
